A bit about me

Hello! Thanks for visiting my page.

Why am I here? Well, back in 1996, half way through my first year as a tertiary music student, I developed a playing-related injury. Eventually it led to me deferring my studies, and only eleven years later did I manage to get myself back in a music-related career (but not performance)! In retrospect, there were things I could have done to help a quicker recovery, or to have avoided the problem in the first place, but I was unaware of them, and wasn't given all that much helpful advice along the way.

From this perspective. I'm now involved in implementing a national strategy towards musicians' health and wellbeing. We thought it would be useful to provide a place for tertiary music students to help each other maintain best shape for making music. This network is one way to do that. I hope it's of use. Please let me (or us!) know how you're faring.

Health and wellbeing initiatives - two articles on the progress

These are two articles I wrote that give an indication of how this network developed, and also the national strategy towards musicians' health and wellbeing of which it's a part.

Beyond prevention is the paper I presented at the 2007 national conference of NACTMUS, which led to the approval by NACTMUS of a proposal to address the most urgent issues surrounding musicians' healthcare in tertiary institutions.

The subsequent… Continue

Hi Catherine, I am a high school teacher in a WA government school. My students are doing a mini introductory project about Occ Health and Safety issues for musicians. I am doing some preliminary research to help me set the task and do the marking! I came to your site after I had input "well being musicians". The other topics that the students have been asked to consider are: • the importance of setting appropriate sound levels
• the importance of hearing protection
• how to avoid physical problems caused by lifting and carrying
• how to avoid repetitive strain injuries,
• problems associated with active and passive smoking
• problems associated with drug and alcohol use
• the importance of well maintained equipment
• the reasons for keeping stage and practise areas tidy
I hope that soem of them will look at your page.
cheers,
Sheena Prince
